Before becoming a wedding make-artist Niki honed her skills at London fashion week and magazines such as Marie Claire! Tell us about yourself…
Hi I’m Niki a Hertfordshire based freelance make-up artist. I live with my husband and two crazy poodles Middy & Lucas! In my spare time I like to be on a beach relaxing with a good book or enjoying long country walks.
Why did you want to become a make-up artist?
I became a make-up artist following my love of art as a child and my love of makeup as a teenager so the two naturally combined. I always loved Art & Design at school and following Art & Design ‘A’ levels I went on to do an Art Foundation course at Camberwell College of Arts and then onto the London College of Fashion to study for a degree in Hair & Make-up for the Performing Arts.
Following university, I worked at MAC, Laura Mercier & Daniel Sandler at The Harrods Urban Retreat spa whilst freelancing and building up my portfolio. I have previously worked at London & Milan Fashion weeks and for magazines including Glamour, Now!, Marie Claire & Good Housekeeping. I have always specialised in wedding make-up and now more so than ever working on hundreds of brides in recent years. I also offer bridal hairstyling by request but choose to specialise in bridal make-up as this is my main passion.
What is your style?
My style of make-up work is varied to suit the individual client however most of my bridal work is a natural style of makeup enhancing a bride’s natural beauty to create the best possible version of herself on her wedding day.
What makes you happy?
Happiness for me is having good health foremost and holidays in the sunshine!
If you could be someone else for a day, who would you be and why?
If I wasn’t doing make-up painting faces, I would definitely be painting canvases instead. To be an artist would be the dream! So, I would definitely jump into David Hockney’s shoes for a day given the chance!
What do you love most about your job?
I love my job! Every day is different. I get to visit some amazing venues and work at some stunning locations across the UK and Europe and I meet so many different interesting people along the way!
What trends are you loving at the moment?
I am loving all the stunning shades of golds and rose golds around at the moment for beautifully enhanced eye makeup and I love creating perfect skin with a gorgeous glow which is always on trend. Although with bridal makeup I try not to follow trends too much as it is best to keep makeup looking natural, timeless and classic so that it does not age in your wedding photos! The gorgeous textured bun hairstyles at the moment are also really creative for me to do.
What’s your drink of choice?
For an early start coffee, for energy coconut water and for a tipple a good glass of red wine! Sorry that’s three!
